Our Heart & Vision
Thankfully, we don't have to come up with a cool mission statement, because Jesus made it easy for us when he told us to go "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19).
That's the mission.
How we as a local church plan do that can be summed up in our vision statement:
Our vision is to be an authentic, inclusive and sending community where the grace of Jesus Christ deeply impacts every area of our ordinary lives.
Let's break this down.
Authentic - By this we simply mean that we are a church where people can be honest about who they really are and what they're really struggling with. It means that we don't pretend to have it all together if we don't. It means we don't use phony religious jargon to sound more spiritually mature than we really are. It means that when people are upset with or frustrated with each other, they can address it honestly instead of pretending everything's okay. It means leaders can lead from a place of humility and weakness, and not think they must have it all together.
Inclusive - This means we accept and include people who are different from us and who have struggles that we don’t have. It means we open up our homes to people who may annoy us, who we may even have prejudices toward. Because that's who Jesus is -- he is the one and only Savior for everyone, the religious elite and the most notorious of sinners.
Sending -- Our God is a sending God. He sent Jesus into this dark world, and Jesus sent His Spirit into his followers (the Church), and the Spirit sends the Church (that's us) into all the dark parts of this world to be a light. So we want to be a sending church that doesn't just gather together, but goes out into the surrounding community to serve and meet the felt needs of our neighbors. We want to be a church that raises up new leaders who can start new ministry endeavors, new life groups, and even new churches.
Now Authentic, Inclusive and Sending are all descriptors of the church community that we want to have, and they all sound great in theory.....
.....but they are all very difficult values to embrace in real life.
That’s where the 2nd part of the vision statement comes in:
........where the grace of Jesus Christ deeply impacts every area of our ordinary lives.
That’s how we become the authentic community we want to be, it’s how we have the grace to be inclusive, it's how we have the boldness and passion to send and be sent -- by letting the grace of Jesus deeply impact every area of life.
The grace of Jesus is good news for every area of life and we want to be a church community where we don't just talk about it, sing about it, have nice little bible studies about it, but actually let it deeply impact every area of our ordinary - eating and drinking, going to work, managing our finances - lives.
That's our vision.
